PS: if you want to consult the original documents cited by Simón de Guilleuma, skip the AHPB and go straight to the Biblioteca de Catalunya, everything you want should be there. But see if you can get scans of the pages, there may be some subtle secondary evidence embedded in the pages that will take a little time to pick up on. Cheers! :-)

Hi Thomas,

There's actually an update on this article I've been meaning to post here for a few months, to the effect that my above-expressed doubts with Simón de Guilleuma’s research now seem unfounded. It seems likely he never actually looked for notarial documents in the AHPB, but only in the (much smaller) notarial section of the Barcelonan main library (<em>which is why I wasn't able to find anything in the former</em>).

To my eyes, the mystery of the invention of the telescope arises solely from historians' cherrypicking only those fragments of the early evidence that suit their pre-chosen narrative. My own (intellectual history) contribution was simply to show how all the Dutch telescope, the German telescope, and the Spanish telescope could all have been part of a single pan-European narrative of invention.

Cheers, ....Nick Pelling....

This is quite fascinating! I am writing an extensive paper on the mystery of who invented the telescope, and came across your History Today article as well as this. Thank you for pointing me in some interesting directions and you Juan Roget bibliography has been of particular help. Enjoy researching all of this further, I know I will :)
