Hi Nick,

not unsurprisingly, probably, I beg to differ about the interest
of the post-1600 history :) It is indeed unlikely (yet not
impossible) to bring new information about the origin of the
Voynich MS, but it is at least fulfilling in the sense that it is
something we know exists (as opposed to the 'meaning' of
the MS), and which also brings some new insights in other
areas.

On topic: I am not at all convinced about the Leonardo connection.
In fact, I am convinced that it isn't there and agree with your
analysis of the f116v 'x'.

Sometimes I think much the same about the VMs' history post-1600 - have all the man-years spent trawling those archives really advanced our understanding of the VMs' early life in any way?

The Occitan-like marginalia (f17r, f66r, f116v) do have the particular benefit of being roughly a century earlier: so untangling their codicological knot may yet yield an enormous historical benefit!

Leonardo or no Leonardo, the text on the last page is written most likely by some other hand than the VM itself. It seems improbable that Leo would be writing comments in the VM and by right hand at that. It is just another part of Sherwood forest :-).

Jan

P.S. I would not be surprised if we next time hear it was written by Robbin' Hood himself.
